Meet Our Board Certified Rheumatologists
John L. Harshbarger, MD— Dr. Harshbarger, a co-founder
of Carolina Arthritis, was raised in Lewistown, PA. He graduated
from Bucknell University and completed medical school as an honors
graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
He remained in Philadelphia at the Lankenau Hospital for his internship
and residency before moving to Chapel Hill, NC for his Fellowship
training at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Harshbarger is
married with two children and enjoys family time, reading and golf.
Gregory F. Schimizzi, MD— Dr. Schimizzi, co-founder
of Carolina Arthritis, was raised in Detroit, MI. He stayed close
to home to complete his undergraduate and medical school studies
at Wayne State University in Detroit, in addition to his internship
and residency at the Wayne State University Affiliated Hospitals.
Dr. Schimizzi completed his Fellowship training at the University
of California at Irvine. His favorite leisure activities involve
spending time with his wife and five children. He enjoys collecting
wine, bicycle riding and music.
David W. Puett, MD— Dr. Puett was raised in Nashville, TN.
He attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and then returned
to Nashville for medical school at Vanderbilt University, graduating
with honors in 1988. Following his internship and residency at the
University of Washington in Seattle, Dr. Puett completed his training
with a rheumatology Fellowship back at Vanderbilt. He joined Carolina
Arthritis Associates in 1993. Dr. Puett spends his free time with
his wife and three children and enjoys exercising, reading and exploring
the outdoors.
David H. Snow, MD— Dr. Snow was raised in Columbus,
Ohio and stayed nearby for his undergraduate studies at Ohio University.
He completed medical school at the Medical College of Ohio and fulfilled
his internship and residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh,
PA. Dr. Snow was Fellowship trained at the University of Pittsburgh
and joined Carolina Arthritis in 1998. Dr. Snow is active with his
church and enjoys outdoor activities with his wife and three children.
Mark D. Harris, MD— Dr. Harris was raised
in Ilion, New York and is a graduate of Siena College. He attended
the Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his internship,
residency and Fellowship training as a Major in the U.S. Air Force
Medical Corps in California and Texas. Dr. Harris joined Carolina
Arthritis in 2004 and enjoys spending his leisure time with his
wife and their two daughters.
Joseph C. Shanahan, MD— Dr. Shanahan was raised in Haddonfield, NJ. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Brown University, Dr. Shanahan graduated with honors from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He moved to Duke University to complete his medical residency and rheumatology fellowship in 2002. Dr. Shanahan joined Carolina Arthritis in 2007 after serving as Clinical Director of the Duke University Scleroderma Research Center and Associate Director of the Duke Lupus Clinic. He enjoys spending free time with his wife and two children.
