Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a versatile technique that uses sound waves to create an image.

Ultrasound can be used to image any patient presenting with a complaint arising within the soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has become a valuable tool to evaluate muscle tendons, ligaments, and joints throughout the body using sound wave produced images. It allows us to diagnose sprains, tears, and other soft tissue conditions.

Our rheumatologists believe ultrasound this is an excellent technique to monitor inflammatory arthritis (e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Gout) and we work closely with regional experts to evaluate the diagnostic studies. The procedure is safe, painless, noninvasive, and there is no radiation exposure to our patients.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Procedure

Taking an ultrasound generally involves patients sitting or laying down on an examination table. Our trained physician may ask you to move the body part in question in order to better evaluate the function of the joint, muscle, or tendon. Once you’re positioned correctly, a water-based gel is applied to the area of the body being examined. The gel allows the ultrasound to make secure contact with the body and eliminates potential air pockets that block sound waves from passing into the body. Our specialist uses a transducer (probe) to guide along the skin until we feel the best images are captured. There should be no pain or discomfort while the transducer is being used against the body. Once the appropriate images are taken, the gel is wiped off your skin. Anything missed simply turns to powder, which doesn’t stain or discolor clothing.

Ultrasound procedures are typically completed in 15 to 30 minutes, but can take longer depending on the situation. Patients are asked to wait while the images are reviewed and can resume normal daily activity once everything is done.

How Should I Prepare for a Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?

We suggest wearing loose, comfortable clothes and leave jewelry at home if possible. You may be asked to wear a gown during the procedure if necessary. No other preparation is required for the ultrasound.

At Carolina Arthritis, our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and informed about how we handle a musculoskeletal ultrasound procedure and the results. If you any have questions for our specialists, please give us a call or fill out our contact form for more information.
